Not all dogs are created equal, and neither are their leashes. Choosing the right leash is about more than appearance. Your dog's size, weight, strength, and walking habits all play an important role in selecting a leash that is comfortable, reliable, and safe.
Does Your Dog's Weight Matter?
Absolutely. A 15-pound dog and a 150-pound dog place very different demands on a leash. A small dog generally needs lightweight hardware and a comfortable leash that doesn't weigh heavily on its collar or harness. A large, powerful dog requires stronger materials, dependable hardware, and a secure handle that gives its owner good control.
Recommended Leash Lengths by Dog Size
The following chart provides general starting points for everyday walking. Dog's Weight Suggested Leash Length are; Under 20 pounds 4–6 feet. Using a 1/4 -3/8 inch Nylon Leash. 20–50 pounds 4–6 feet. Using 1/2-3/4 inch Nylon or Dacron Leash 50–90 pounds 4–6 feet 5/8 - 3/4 inch Nylon. A shorter traffic lead for close control or even a Hudson Handle Double Leash. I strongly recommend a British Slip Leash as a half harness, so you're not pull on the dog throat. These are general guidelines. Leash length should also depend on the dog's behavior and walking.
